| Back Story | Rene Fonck [1894–1953] was a French aviator and top WWI Allied fighter ace, holding the title of “all-time Allied Ace of Aces.” This is one of the few postcards reproducing a Simatos portrait. In March 1927, Fonck signed it at lower left, inscribed its verso, addressed to a bartender aboard the SS France — a ship that after WWI had been converted to an all-first-class transatlantic passenger ship. |
