| Back Story | Originally, Reiter had misidentified the subject of this portrait as Anne Bancroft. But now it’s confirmed that this is a portrait of Maria Callas — proven by its appearance on the cover of an invitation dated May 31st, 1963, to a private dinner in her honor at the River Restaurant at the Savoy Hotel in London. The dinner was followed by her performance at the Royal Festival Hall. Was Simatos a guest at the dinner? We may never know. Callas’ resemblance to Bancroft is quite striking here. |
